16/Sep/2001: 2001 Europe Champ. (5 of 5)

Canzo (Italy)

Manzi conquers the European Championship having won 3 rounds out of 5

The 2001 Trial European Championship finished last Sunday in the prealpine locality of Canzo, in the Region of the Lakes, with a fine weather. Manzi had won three out of the four previous rounds (those in France, Finland and Spain) and arrived at this round with a comfortable advantage (15 points) over Sam Connor.

The Moto Club Canzo prepared fifteen sections, all of them along the course of a river, with lots of slippery rocks. Like in other rounds of this championship, the scores were very low, which made any error very difficult to recover.

Manzano continued adapting to the mechanics of the new 2002 bike, still being tuned for competition, but even so he would have made the best first lap, had not been for a rigorous five in the fifth section. In spite of it, Manzi recovered the rithm, until he slipped in section 8 of the second lap, and lost definitively the victory.

In the end, Connor obtained his first triumph in the Championship. He was followed by Re Delle Gandine, Jose Maria Sáez, and Manzano.

With this result, Manzi adds the title of European Champion to the already obtained of Junior World Champion, and confirms the attainment of his two main objectives for the season. Sam Connor also confirms his second place, and Jose Maria Sáez reaches the third place of the podium of the championship.
